CHILLY GONZALES

Gonzales, born Jason Charles Beck, is a Grammy-nominated Canadian musician currently residing in Paris, France. Though best known for his first MC and electro albums, he is also a pianist, producer, and songwriter.He regularly collaborates with the Canadian musicians Feist, Peaches and Mocky. Additionally, he has collaborated with Jamie Lidell on the albums Multiply and Compass, and Buck 65 on the album Secret House Against the World. According to The New Yorker, "when Gonzales released an album called 'Presidential Suite', Feist accompanied him on tour around Europe and Australia." As one of the most talented and flat-out entertaining musicians around, you’d expect Chilly Gonzales would have no trouble finding an audience. Yet aside from his successes as a producer, he is yet to make a solo record that lives up to the experience of his critically lauded live performances. Okay, there’s Solo Piano, a beautiful collection of original piano compositions, but somehow that record doesn’t feel like a Gonzales record at all, devoid of the character that makes him one of a kind.

His latest project Ivory Tower, the soundtrack to a film of the same name that he writes and stars in. While the very nature of a soundtrack makes this unlikely to be the record that thrusts him into the mainstream eye, it carries all the hallmarks of Chilly Gonzales the entertainer. ‘Knight Moves’ eases the album into motion in the form of a sweeping instrumental with delicate piano and string arrangements, before two minutes into the second track, Chilly utters his first words, “I’m a dogshit ashtray”. Just when you thought Gonzales had slipped into the realms of serious musicianship, he brings the tone back down with a series of witty and often hilarious one liners. The song continues: “I’m an imperial armpit sweating Chianti, I’m socialist lingerie, I’m diplomatic techno, I’m gay pastry and racist cappuccino...who am I? I am Europe”. Such a song might have had a short lifespan in other hands, but the strength of the accompanying melodies gives it replay value.

Stylistically, Ivory Tower finds Gonzales treading new ground once again: produced entirely by Boys Noize, the record has a pulsating euro-pop flavour. This approach has varying degrees of success, but for the few misplaced blasts of garish synths and computerised vocals, there are neat disco rhythms that add depth to a still-piano-dominated album. Elsewhere there are some down tempo instrumentals in ‘Bittersuite’ and ‘Final Fantasy’, and occasional witty interjections, but vocals are used sparingly throughout. This can make for some fairly long instrumental sections that feel padded out for the sake of the soundtrack, but don’t necessarily work as standalone pieces of music. The best moments, then, are those of joyous pop like ‘You Can Dance’, or clever wordplay as in ‘The Grudge’, that combine his personality with his prowess as a pianist.

BBC, tell us all about his most precious to this year of 2011.



My attentions in this list goes first of all to a guy called James Blake.

#2 - James Blake has been announced in 2nd place for the Sound of 2011.
London producer James Blake sails into Sound Of 2011's 2nd spot at the forefront of the emerging post-dubstep sub genre of UK club music. The Deptford based artist started singing and studying piano at the age of six, a tutorage which eventually led to Blake's attendance of Goldsmiths University to study Popular Music. Early listening came in the form of his parent's classical and jazz collections, in addition to US Soul and R 'n' B from the likes of Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo and Sly & The Family Stone. Blake's love of electronic music came much later when the artist discovered dubstep duo Digital Mystikz a few months prior to his Goldsmiths enrolment.

My second attention goes to #5Claire Maguire, an awesome voice, even could be attached more to an Pop music, she could go far thats no arguing about that.

Clare Maguire has been announced as 5th place in the Sound of 2011.
This Birmingham chanteuse has kept her early fans waiting patiently before stepping into the limelight. Signed two years ago after a stream of impressive online demos, the singer has been hidden away since 2008 working on debut album Light After Dark.
Maguire has dreamt of a career in music since the age of seven. It wasn't until a teacher encouraged her to give up the dream at 17 that the Sister Rosetta Tharpe influenced singer found the motivation to quit school and go after her goals full-time. Demos on MySpace and Last FM soon showcased Maguire's impressive voice to a host of enthusiastic labels, and the Midlands girl flew stateside for meetings with Rick Rubin and shots with Jay-Z before finally settling on a deal with Universal.

 

Want to get up close and personal with Richie? The minimal star has been chosen as the first subject for Slices DVD magazine’s new ‘Pioneers of Electronic Music’ serie, this was a realease of 2006, but only now came to my hands, its still very fresh to the current days, going trough the begining of Richie Hawtin, passing to the amazing movement of Detroit showing the rise of the Plastikman.

RA Poll: Top 50 tracks of 2010

RA winds up its year-end polls with the staff's take on the top tunes of the year.

One thing you probably didn't see coming in 2010: the glorious return of the anthem. Unlike last year, when ultra-subtle tracks like STL's "Silent State" made the top 5, 2010's top 50 is packed with unapologetically catchy bangers, most of which probably got as much play in Ibiza as they did in Berlin. It's as if club music finally became so niched that the crowds once again yearned for collective experiences.

Indeed, if Motor City Drum Ensemble's epic remix of NUfrequency hadn't been officially released in 2009, it might've topped our chart this year. (It'll have to make to do with setting a record for most consecutive months at #1 on RA's DJ charts.) But the RA staff isn't composed solely (or even largely) of DJs. So our list has plenty of weird ones too. UK bass's latest mutations rank nicely, stonefaced techno is still going strong and Chicago's juke phenomenon crashes the party as well. All sorts of music took our fancy this year, this is simply 50 of the most popular among our staff.  

If you really like electronic music, this is an really good chart from the bests of the 2010.

Electro has always been the bread and butter of the Western crowd. France kicked off the distortion explosion with Justice, DatA and the Ed Banger sound, while the US set have been high balling with crunchy jams courtesy of the Los Angeles party set, including Steve Aoki's Dim Mak crew as well as Classixx and the late great Guns N Bombs. But over in Japan, Shinichi Osawa has been making plenty of noise with his relentless output of forward thinking, super-sized bangers, beating his Western contemporaries at their own game.

Having already unleashed a celebrated artist album back in 2007 (The One), Osawa's latest masterpiece comes in Teppan Yaki, and despite its dubious title, the oversized package collects all of Osawa's biggest remixes to date, including main-room reworks for the likes of Boys Noize, Cazals, Van She and Bag Raiders, as well as an extra disc of the producer's remixes for Japanese artists like De De Mouse, becoming a primer of sorts for far-out Japanese club culture.

 

 

The relentless reputation of the French when it comes to mixing/dropping the illest electronic tracks with utter fluency is once again reinforced with this fresh new banger. Jamaica, the Parisian duo formerly known as Poney Poney, recently released ‘I Think I Like U 2’ off their upcoming debut album, produced by Xavier de Rosnay (of Justice) and mastered by Peter Franco (sound engineer, worked on Daft Punk’s ‘Alive 2007’). The quality of the french  sound/production is immediately apparent in the track as is the talent and appeal of Jamaica’s Antoine Hilaire (vocals/guitar) and Florent Lyonnet (bass/vocals) who are currently working on finishing up the album with Rosnay and Franco.

 

 

Dubstep is making massive waves in the UK and is finally starting to garner some attention on this side of the pond.  And the latest U.K breakout dubstep artist/producer Rusko has gone in on Tupac’s California love, and by gone in I mean he has taken the best part of the song which is “Roger Troutman’s talk-box verse “California love” and turned it into a banger. Though not your typical dubstep track it definitely shows the growth in the genre in terms of adopting new styles and elements. It still retains the essence of a 2tep/dubstep track which is the dark bassline. For once I wish I was from Cali so I can sing along to this with pride.

 

 

 

The success of electro-pop phenomenon Hot Chip is no mystery. The English group composed of Alexis Taylor (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Joe Goddard (vocals, synths, percussion), Al Doyle (guitar, vocals), Owen Clarke (synths, guitar) and Felix Martin (percussion), has in the past decade established themselves as perhaps one of the most innovative and unique acts in music. Their eccentric approach to making music has not only redefined their own genre but also somehow transcended the barriers of genre and planted inspiration in all corners of the music world. Although Trendland previously featured Hot Chip in February, I couldn’t help but share this track with you all.

“I Feel Bonnie” is a collaborative remix of Hot Chip’s single “I Feel Better” between Hot Chip and Nashville folk/country musician Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy (aka Will Oldham). The seven minute long piece is more a musical journey than a song, and the genius of Hot Chip is made obvious by their insane ability of making seven minutes seem like so much less.


 

 “I am on a 24hr champagne diet”

Erykah Badu’s sixth album New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) was released yesterday and one of the instant stand outs is the message laden and immediately controversial “Window Seat.” The song in it’s self is smooth, easy, soulful, and insightful. The majority of the controversy stems from the accompanying music video. The music video was “shot guerrilla style” in one take and captures her walking along a Dallas, Texas, sidewalk stripping off her clothes until she is eventually naked. Suddenly a shot rings out as the song ends and Badu falls to the ground close to the site where John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

The track “Move For Me” is a collaboration between Kaskade and Toronto native Deadmua5 (Joel Thomas Zimmerman ), two of the most illuminating names in house music. I think it perfectly reflects the potential that house music has to not only move you physically but also on an emotional level with it’s climactic progressions and infectious vocals. The production is top notch and in the right mood and surrounding the potency is infinite.

The beautiful Lara Stone is starring in the latest Versace fragrance campaign:Versus. The short tv/internet commercial was shot by Craig McDean.

Duck Sauce is a collaboration between Armand Van Helden and A-Trak. They decided to team up and create some disco house tunes in a 2009 way and so far so good. As they put it ” its melding the spirit of classic disco house with modern day production thump and clever new twists”. Gil Scott-Heron has been off the music radar for about 13 years.  That’s a pretty long hiatus for the man who has been called “the godfather of rap” and “the black Bob Dylan.”  But he is back.  His newest release is not like the rest of Scott-Heron’s music, in that it’s main focus isn’t politics, but rather the singer/poet/author himself.  I’m New Here is an introspective piece that expresses Gil’s current state of mind as well as what brought him to where he is.  The album is a mix of songs, spoken word recordings, and interludes of Gil speaking.  Me and the Devil is a cover of a Bobby “Blue” Bland song.  The song has a simple bluesy background beat that allows for Gil’s soulful voice to take center stage.
